The story

As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, a mysterious epidemic transforms part of the world into zombies. Soldiers exploring a devastated supermarket discover a terrified little girl and… a solitary hand. Between the shelves and the cash register, an unconfessed love story has been sacrificed to the devastating wave that swept everything away.

Andrea Battistoni - Translation & adaptation by Véronique Tollet

Between cult series and horror cinema, Andrea Battistoni brings opera into its time with Zombie Opera. Inspired by The Walking Dead, this commission from the Royal Opera of Wallonia-Liège poses a challenge: to prove that opera can still tell universal stories by drawing from the contemporary collective imagination, much like Verdi or Puccini who were inspired by the best-selling novels of their time.

Far from being a pastiche, Zombie Opera is a fully-fledged opera, rooted in the lyrical tradition while embracing the sounds of our time. To write the score, Andrea Battistoni summons the great names of the 20th century (Bernstein, Rota, Sondheim) as well as masters of film music (John Williams, Howard Shore, Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner).
