The "Week-end des Coteaux" – Liège lights up again

On 4 and 5 April 2026, Liège will revive one of its most unique rituals.

Starts
04
April 2026 10:00 Europe/Brussels
Ends
05
April 2026 23:45 Europe/Brussels
There are cities that are visited.
And then there are those that are lived.

On 4th and 5th April 2026, Liège will reignite one of its most unique rituals: the Weekend of the Coteaux, a new format of a heritage event that, for over thirty years, has illuminated the steep alleys of the city with the light of thousands of candles.

After several years of pause and transformation, the event returns in an unprecedented format: a full weekend of meetings, artistic creations, and luminous strolls, in the heart of the historic centre of the City of Fire.

A long-awaited return.
And an open invitation to the Euregio.

The Ballet of Luminéoles® Company Driven by the Wind

A city that tells its story in the light of candles

Between Saint-Lambert Square, the alleys of Pierreuse, the dead ends of Hors-Château, the Montagne de Bueren, and the hanging gardens of the Citadel, Liège reveals a rarely seen face.

Thousands of candles create an intimate path through the stairs, the narrow streets, and the panoramas of the city.

For one weekend, heritage becomes a living stage:

light installations, concerts, artistic performances, and unusual visits transform the Coteaux into a true open-air theatre.

The people of Liège themselves participate, notably through workshops during the month of March where residents and visitors create their own lanterns intended to illuminate the promenade.

A simple gesture.
But deeply linked to the soul of the place and the city.

Behind the Walls® Nathalie Maufroy

A renaissance for an iconic event

Long known as the Nocturne des Coteaux, the event is reinventing itself in 2026 with a clear ambition: to restore the event's heritage and tourism dimension.

"We want this event to become a quality tourism project again (...) and a true city experience,", explains Fabrice Drèze, Alderman for Commercial and Tourism Attractiveness in Liège.

The new format — a full weekend in spring — allows time to discover the city in a different way:
  • by day, in the cultural effervescence of the historic centre;

  • by night, in the soft and warm atmosphere of candles.

Bloomlight® VOUW

An experience to be lived with the people of Liège

At the border of Dutch and German cultures, Liège has always shared a natural closeness with its neighbours.

After the winter carnivals and before the spring festivities like the King's Day in the Netherlands, the Weekend des Coteaux stands out as a unique moment in the euro-regional cultural calendar.

A moment to:

  • Stroll through a city that tells its story differently
  • meet its inhabitants
  • share a drink on an improvised terrace
  • and understand what makes the identity of the ardent city.
Here, the celebration does not impose itself.
She unfolds, step by step, in the light of candles, museums and the locals.
